Amulet-Painting / Ella Cohen Vansover

The starting point of Ella Cohen Vansover’s works in this solo exhibition was amulets – for both their conceptual significance and aesthetics. Personal amulets worn on the body or house amulets, ones purchased in the market or collected by their owners out of belief in their intrinsic protective powers. Whether the latter exist or not, they still hold the power to offer moments of comfort, bliss, and hope. In this group of works too, Cohen Vansover maintains the charged tension in her paintings, a tension that most often stems from the exposure of the pictorial illusion. At the same time, here she also allows the images to dissolve, break away from the shape and become a saturated abstract form or even a three-dimensional object
